The problem in the vertical

Licensed land surveying is a regulated profession, and the regulation is not advisory. A survey job moves through defined phases toward statutory submissions, and each phase carries requirements that exist because the output has legal standing. Boundaries, titles, and development approvals rest on the surveyor’s work, which is why the profession is licensed and why the process is prescribed. Getting the sequence right is part of the professional obligation, not a matter of preference.

The exposure comes from doing steps out of order. When a phase advances before its prerequisites are satisfied — a submission prepared on data that was never verified, an approval sought before a required check was done — the error is not caught by a warning. It surfaces later, in a rejected submission or, worse, in a legal dispute over a boundary that was set on a flawed foundation. In most operations the job flow lives in individual discipline and institutional memory, which means it holds until the day it does not. The industry manages the risk by trusting people to remember, which is precisely where regulated work should not depend on memory.

The system

Dasterra treats the job flow itself as the system, not a convention layered on top of one. The phases a survey job must move through are modelled explicitly, and the transitions between them are hard gates: work cannot advance until the prerequisites of the next phase are met. A step that skips its dependencies is not merely flagged, it is blocked. The compliance that the profession requires becomes something the platform enforces, so a firm’s obligations are held by the workflow instead of resting on whoever happens to be watching.

With the flow governed, the routine work of each phase can be automated safely. The artifacts a surveying firm produces at every stage — the documents, records, and submissions that the process generates — are handled by the system rather than assembled by hand, because the platform already knows the state of the job and what each phase requires.
